Does Chebe Powder Really Grow Your Kinky Coily Hair?

The Chebe powder fever has been making lots of waves in the natural hair community after a documentary showed the long hip-length hair and of women of chad who actually use this powder to grow their hair. Well that’s how I got to know about the powder. But does it really work and does it really grow your hair?

Women applying chebe powder to their hair

Chebe powder is derived from two plants belonging to the same family. The first plant is  known as Croton Zambesicus ( Lavender Croton). Yes i bet you don’t even know what that is. It is a shrub which can be found all over West Africa especially Ghana, the Gambia, Nigeria and Burkina Faso. The second plant is known as Croton Gratissimus (Lavender Feverberry) which is also found in the southern part of Africa. However using its powder for haircare originated from a tribe in the Chad Republic where women have extremely long hair as a result of their consistent application of this powder for their hair.  The plant is roasted and crushed, then it is sieved to obtain what we call chebe powder.

Chebe Powder helps in moisturizing and conditioning your hair. It basically allows your hair to lock in moisture longer. If you have a hard time retaining moisture then this powder could work for you.  Because it is also a thick powder, when applied to the hair, it improves the hair’s density making it appear thick.

Does Chebe Grow Your Hair?

Now back to the main question if chebe powder really grows your hair faster. Well the answer is no. Chebe is not responsible for stimulating hair growth, however, application of allows you to retain moisture and make your stronger so that it is less prone to shedding and  breaking.

Another advantage of using Chebe is that it allows you to actually manipulate your hair less in the form of protective styling. You would agree with me that after application, these chad women braid their hair and leave the powder and oil in their hair for the next application. Hence it is not necessarily the chebe powder that does the trick. The secret is in the moisture retention and protective styling that comes with using chebe powder.

How to apply chebe powder

There are two popular ways of applying the chebe powder

  1. Wet your hair with water then apply the powder to your damp hair.  Then top it up with an oil or pomade. Make sure your work the product into your hair thoroughly. Braid up the hair and after 3-5 days repeat the process without washing the previous application. But if you really want to wash and reapply you can.
  2.  The second method of application is by mixing your small amount of your favorite oil and butter with just a teaspoon of the chebe powder. Mix everything together. Apply to your wet hair and braid your hair up.

You might not be too comfortable wearing your chebe hair in public because it really isn’t something you can throw on your hair and walk around town like your hair is looking its best. If you use chebe powder, then make use of wigs or headwraps. I would advice you don’t apply this unto your scalp in order to avoid clogged pores due to the repeated applications. You can purchase chebe on amazon.
